Quinlynne (AmberMUSH)

Played for eight months in 1997, Quinlynne was a pirate/smuggler that operated out of Reaversport and a Kryonia. For the most part, she was only active when things were slow over Naeve-side. She was altogether abandoned around Thanksgiving 1997 when I discovered Shadowrun Seattle and created a character there to tide over the slow spots on AmberMUSH.

Later, her +sheet was passed on to another player, though nothing ever really became of that transfer. Eventually, the +sheet itself was destroyed due to inactivity.

However, there's the possibility that she might come back...

Description

Quinlynne Head Shot

Quinlynne has a bearing as inconspicuous as the shadows that flit about a room. In moving, her stride is confident, yet casual enough not to draw attention to the soft scent of the sea that wafts in her wake. She is an odd mix of roguish athleticism and quiet elegance. Her skin is a deep tan, wind-blown in appearance, and her hair is a sun-bleached platinum blonde, cut long and loose to flow down past her shoulders. Her eyes are cold and calculating, intelligent and icy blue. They survey and absorb every fine detail from near the top of her 5'8" frame.

Obscuring her chest is a billowing white cotton shirt, not laced up all the way. On her legs, dropping over soft well-worn leather boots, are a pair of loose flowing trousers. A number of pouches dangle from her belt. She wears a simple cutlass, strapped low on her left hip, with a basket hilt of wrought steel, none too elaborate.

Background

Quinlynne in a Duster

Decades ago, Quinlynne was born to an affluent family in a port city. Her father was a merchant and maintained a sizable sailing fleet that had always infatuated the young girl. Growing up around sails and sailing men, she grew to love the sea and vowed to someday captain her own ship.

Against her parents' wishes, she entered the merchant marine when she was of sufficient age and worked her way up through the ranks until that fateful day when she was seconded by Captain Johannsen.

The Captain was a smuggler, though he kept that well under his hat in the public. Under his tutelage, she learned the tricks of the trade and was soon running the ship as his first mate.

The years passed and eventually she was able to afford her own ship. Initially acting as an accompaniment to Captain Johannsen's sorties, she was soon sailing out on her own with a trustworthy crew eager for adventure and bounty.

Her travels took her to New Antigua, a port famous for its buccaneers, and there she really cut her teeth on the trade. New Antigua is a ruthless place and it took all of her strength, inner and outer, to carve a niche for herself and make her name worthy of note. She was primarily a smuggler, but grew a taste for piracy once her crew was trained enough. The Carnelian Slashes had minor repute in the waters of nearby shadows as a flag to avoid.

With time, the pickings around New Antigua slimmed and Quinlynne thirsted for adventure elsewhere, taking her crew out into the open sea in search of new ports.

Years of traveling from port to port brought her to Reaversport and Kryonia. Though primarily carrying illicit cargo, she encountered people, both real and not, that brought her closer to the politics of the two poles. At one point, she was even employed by Amber Intelligence for information gathering, though that duty has since fallen by the wayside.

She and her crew were a force to be reckoned with during the last stand against the Tandrai in Reaversport when that conflict came to a climactic and gory conclusion. The experience nonetheless soured her opinion of the port though, and she has not landed there in many years.

Her time in Kryonia was more favourable there, even leading to her taking a lover for a time. From this union came a child that was later abducted during a raid and never recovered. Though she suffered from the loss, the effects were not as profound as they might have been for one that was more inclined toward maternity. Where that child is now is unknown and barely thought about.

The years after the raid on her ship were dark, for her livelihood had been scuttled and most of her crew captured and jailed. It took a lot of perseverence and patience, but she rebuilt her ship and sailed out once more with a new crew and renewed enthusiasm. A little bolder and a little wiser, her smuggling is slowly morphing into piracy.
